Review: Freddie Gibbs - ESGN

I've been a fan of Freddie Gibbs since first hearing the DJ Skee x Gibbs Midwestgangstaboxframecadillacmuzik album back in 2009. Since then, Gibbs has come and gone from a label deal with Young Jeezy, made EPs with Madlib, and released a lot of great music.

For his latest retail release, Gibbs went back to the independent route and put out through his own imprint. In comparison to Baby Face Killa, this album is very one-track-minded. Whereas BFK had a variety of songs, flows, and production styles - ESGN is a focused shoulder fired missle of gangster rap.  This album is probably only for the seasoned Gibbs fan. The album contains many guest features from people you've probably never heard of, and probably didn't want to. I'd recommend deleting and/or trimming any song via iTunes that features "Lil Sodi." That being said, there are few gems mixed in here and there, including "Eastside Moonwalker," "F.A.M.E.," "Paper," and "Lose Control."

To me this album should have been given away as a freebie as it's diluted with guests etc; and Baby Face Killa should have been retail offering. But that's just me.

My rating: 6/10
